The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Michael Link, considered Israel’s intention to annex the Jordan Valley as illegal and threatens the chances of a two-state solution.
In a statement on the issue, Link denounced comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said he would carry out the measure if he was re-elected.
“Asserting the right to annexation in the 21st century is an attempt to return to a world that no longer exists,” said Michael Link.
“The annexation will further confine the Palestinians to small, fragmented and sporadic cantons, while others will continue to live under Israeli military rule.”
“The annexation, if realized, would effectively end the illusion of a two-state solution. Instead, it would consolidate the reality of a single state of separate legal systems, political rights and social opportunities that are largely unequal,” he stressed.
